How to get baby smooth skin for those with Keratosis Pilaris aka Chicken Skin | Print |  E-mail

When I was 15 I noticed I had rough, dry and bumpy skin on the back of my arms and thighs.  I had no idea what this was but these little bumps had already overstayed their welcome and I was determined to show them the door.  This condition helped to fuel an already obsessive compulsiveness over my skin. Back then, the doctor told me I had dry skin and this would be “cured” by applying baby oil to my skin every day.  After many bottles of baby oil, more than a few falls in my bathtub and a growing frustration, I realized this was NOT the answer to my skin problem.  I tried everything.. lotions, scrubs, wrapping my Vaseline coated skin in Saran Wrap (don’t judge, I told you I was desperate). But nothing worked so I gave up and resigned to live with this unsightly nuisance.

Fast forward about 10 years when I hear about Keratosis Pilaris (KP) for the first time.  There are many types and degrees of KP but the type I suffered from was known as KP Alba which is rough, dry and bumpy skin with no irritation. FINALLY…. Someone had figured this out, now all that was left to do was to read down the page for the cure.   This is where my world stopped, momentarily anyway.  There is no cure. Everything went dark…I had to come up for air. I was devastated, but this re-ignited the fire to find a solution to this problem.  After much reading and experimenting, I have discovered that the experts, in this case, are right… there is no cure. BUT, there is a solution which is just as good as a cure if you are persistent in applying it.

First, you will need a good loofah or exfoliating bath mitt (http://tinyurl.com/dnf95m ). While you are in the shower (or bath, whichever you prefer) use the loofah on the affected area moving in a circular motion.  For each affected area, scrub for 20 seconds to make sure you get enough “loofah action” to make a difference (if you are going to go to all the trouble of adding this to your daily routine, you want to do it right so you will be able to see a difference.) You could also use a moisturizing scrub as well (we recommend Trillium Body Scrub http://tinyurl.com/ddjwzo ).Once you are done with your shower, you want to moisturize these areas with a really good moisturizer.  Maybe an oil or thick lotion (not necessarily the same moisturizer you will need for the rest of your body).  We recommend Soulstice Perfecting Body Balm (http://tinyurl.com/cxtgeg ) or Deep Steep Soy Body Lotion (http://tinyurl.com/cds4l9 ).

And that’s it.  You should be able to see a difference within one week, two weeks at the most. This will manage your KP and before you know it, you will be ready for your summer attire.  But remember, you must keep it up or the evil KP will rear its ugly head again….and we wouldn’t want that, now would we?
