Wine glass charms are not only a nice touch; they can also be very helpful at any type of gathering that uses matching stemware.  These are done very simply, but you could go all out and connect charms and other unique beads.  Just remember, if you use any sort of metal beads, charms, etc., you are going to have to periodically polish them before using.  That is why I prefer to keep mine simple.  The wine glass charms easily hook around the stem of a wine or martini glass, water goblet (any glass with a stem) so your guests can identify similar looking glasses at a party or gathering.

In all honesty these are not as easy as they look to make, but you only have to make them once and you can reuse them, so it is definitely worth it.  I used memory wire which admittedly, is my least favorite crafting wire.  For this project though, it serves a purpose, which is to have the wire bounce back to its shape, even after several uses.  Take some time to practice before you start adding your beads and be careful, it is called memory wire for a reason.  It will fight you, but you can win if you take control of it!

All you need is ring size memory wire, assorted colored beads with holes large enough for the memory wire to fit through (I used 6mm glass beads) and pliers-preferably round nose pliers.  You most likely can find all of these materials at your local craft store.

Follow the instructions on the package for cutting the memory wire and then use a metal file or sand paper to smooth the ends.  Don’t skip this part; the edges can be very sharp.  When I work with memory wire, I like to wear gloves and have a pair of work/garden gloves that I use only for certain jewelry/wire projects.

For this style I used 1.5 – 2 full loops of the ring size memory wire.  Try different sizes as you are practicing to get the look you like.  I find the longer the tails, the easier they are to get on and off the stems of the glasses.

Add your beads or charms (connect charms with jump rings), the picture shows wine glass charms with beads only.

Use the round nose pliers to bend back the memory wire ends to create small loops that will interlock.  This takes practice, but the round nose pliers will make it much easier.  Don’t worry about every single one having the exact same shape or even size, that is boring, be creative, each one should be unique.

Add the finished charms to the glasses before filling them with the beverage.  When done, simply remove before washing the glasses, wash them separately if needed and save for next time or let each guest take theirs home.  Have fun!
