Sun Safe Essential Oils:
If you spend a lot of time outdoors and use essential oils, be sure to research which essential oils are phototoxic. Essential oils are composed of dozens to hundreds of natural plant chemical components. Phototoxic essential oils contain natural plant chemical components that can cause the skin to burn when exposed to the sun. Many (but not all) citrus essential oils are phototoxic. Phototoxic essential oils include bergamot, expressed lime, expressed lemon, bitter orange, and grapefruit essential oils. Non-phototoxic citrus essential oils include mandarin, sweet orange, bergamot FCF, distilled lime, distilled lemon, and petitgrain (from bitter orange leaf) essential oils.
Essential Oils For Insect Repellents:
I don’t like using synthetic bug repellents. Not only are many of them potentially toxic, but they smell terrible too! I prefer using essential oils for insect repellents. I have used essential oils as repellents for many years, in a wide range of ecosystems, and they work well. Some good insect repellents for teens and adults are geranium, catnip, lemon tea tree (Leptospermum petersonii), lemon eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora), and lavender essential oils. Dilute them well in a carrier such as a carrier oil or lotion. Or you can make a spray (shake well before each use). I recommend using a 1 to 2% concentration of essential oils for adults. For best results reapply your blend often: every hour or so. I highly suggest researching essential oils before use, since many can’t be used on babies, young kids, pregnant women, or people with certain health issues. Be sure to always dilute essential oils well before use.
