Apple cider vinegar, otherwise known as ACV in the natural health community, has a very broad variety of uses. It not only can have a positive impact on your health when you take it orally either by mixing it with water or taking it straight in “shots” daily.
It can also be excellent for your hair and sometimes even your skin. I’ve long used ACV for my hair to promote a shiny look as well as to gently remove buildup and dulling debris that can stick to the hair when it becomes dirty.
I found it particularly useful because I personally only wash my hair every other day and sometimes skip almost three days between washings so I really like something that can get my hair squeaky clean without drying it out. This is exactly what apple cider vinegar does and that is why I actually used it as a vital ingredient in my natural shampoo. Here are some of the benefits ACV imparts to your hair, and these are great reasons to use it in the summer time when frizz is a bigger issue and dirt and debris as well since your scalp sweats more.
1.) ACV has the ability to help seal the cuticle of the hair, which helps reduce frizz in the summer time when humidity is high and the hair is more likely to absorb that humidity and increase in diameter (ie frizz). It also combats porosity, which is a common issue, especially for color treated or processed hair. This means that the hair’s surface has become more porous, allowing it to absorb humidity more easily and giving it a dull, flyaway look. ACV combats all of this by sealing the hair off to some degree from this type of effect.
2.) ACV is excellent for scalp health. It is a gentle but very effective natural astringent. This means it cleans and acts as an antiseptic and antibacterial agent so it helps to keep the scalp clean, dandruff free and itch-free.
3.) ACV dramatically increases shine. Because it helps to flatten out the surface of the hair strands, your hair reflects the light better, bending it and resulting in a shiny appearance.
4.) The natural acidity and pH of ACV softens the hair naturally, making it appear softer and more “touchable”, without compromising body and volume.
