There are two main states that you exist in at any moment; you are either in a state of 'doing' or a state of 'being'. Let’s take a look at the difference.
Doing: The word doing implies some type of action, performance or execution. Two synonyms for the word, doing, are accomplish and achieve.
Being: The word being implies existence. It implies existing in a perfect or complete state without the need for adding anything, be it a characteristic quality or material object.
I make sure I spend some time ‘being’ every day, but I have to admit, it is sometimes quite hard to peel myself away from my ‘doings’.
I believe I may know the reason why!
It seems that we are taught, from age one, to do, do, do. As we grow up, we are still told to do this or do that. We are also asked at such a young age what we want to do when we grow up. We tend to continue these conversations within our own minds when we are adults - these conversations being called, ‘self-talk’.
My husband and I were having a conversation on this topic the other day. We were talking about how different it would have been growing up if we were told something different. Check out the scenarios below:
- Instead of being told, ‘do your homework’, what if you were told, ‘let’s chat for 5 minutes about your day before you do your homework’.
- Instead of, ‘did you practice enough?’, it was, ‘you’ve been practicing for a while now, why don’t you take a break and we’ll go for a walk and get some fresh air’.
- Instead of, ‘I have so much to do, I have to get it all done today’, you say, ‘I’ve accomplished enough for the day - now I’m going to spend some time relaxing.’
Don’t get me wrong - there is no problem with doing things. But it’s when you push yourself beyond your threshold and you get stressed out from thinking you haven’t done enough - that’s when it is taken to the extreme and can start to take a toll on your health.
The endless efforts of our outer doings are mainly programmed from our early childhood conditioning of being told that what we did was ‘not enough’ or ‘not good enough’. So we did more and more, seeking acknowledgment and confirmation of the fact that we finally did enough - enough to get praise and recognition for what we did.
Could you imagine, as a young child, being taught by your parents how important it is to just sit and BE with yourself every day? Think about that. How do you think that would have changed how you operate in the world today?
I believe I would not have as many experiences of trying to get everything done on a daily basis.
I believe I would not lose any sleep over all the things that I did not get done on a particular day.
I believe I would not feel as edgy or stressed when I feel like I did not have a productive day.
I believe I would not feel as overwhelmed when I look around my house or desk and see all that needs to get done.
Doing always feels like something has to get done, or else. Being feels like no matter what gets done, it’s perfect. The more you BE, the less you need To Do in order to feel fulfilled.
So how do we go about filling our days with more ‘Being’ rather than ‘Doing’?
- Begin to spend time doing nothing........start out with 5 minutes and then work your way up to 20 minutes each day. Sit on a chair, close your eyes just BE there.
Even if your mind wanders and thoughts show up that say, ‘what are you doing? nothing??? you can’t just sit here and do nothing, you have so much to do!' Then sit some more and ignore the urge to get up and do again. You will be surprised by the fact that taking this time out to be, you will actually get more done - truly you will! And you will not only get more done, you will be OK with not getting everything done that you had written on your To Do List. Actually, maybe you could make a To Be List instead.........ahhh, I like that!
Give it a try. Sit and Be and see what changes unfold in your everyday life. I can pretty much guarantee that you will start to feel improvements in many other areas of your life as well.
So grab a big pillow, jump on your couch and cuddle up...........your mind and body will thank you!
