Have you ever been at home, had the radio on and one of your favorite songs came on and you couldn’t help yourself – you had to get up and dance? This happened to me recently. One of my favorite songs came on the radio and without hesitating I stepped out of my kitchen, into my living room and boogied down!
Have you ever done that? Do you remember how you felt? I can almost guarantee that you felt 110% better than before you boogied down (I know I did!).
Dancing can be exhilarating, fun and meditative. And there are many benefits to dancing, but first, let's learn a bit about the origins of dance.
It seems that dancing has been around for eons. Paintings depicting dancing figures have been found in tombs dating back to pre-historic times. Ancient civilizations have used this art form for many purposes. One purpose is for rituals, such as performing temple dances to worship Gods and Goddesses. To zone out, or to enter a trance-like state is another purpose of dance. Entertainment is also another way in which many ancient civilizations used the art form of dance.
Today, dancing is still a huge part of many cultures and is used in celebrations, ceremonies, performances and it especially has exploded as a form of exercise, (zumba anyone?). Also, dancing in many cultures is considered sacred. People use dance as prayer, as a means of spiritual growth and as a connection to The Divine.
Used as a form of meditation, dancing can be deeply transformational. It can become quite a powerful tool to anchor your being into the present moment.
So how do you start? It's quite simple.
Let's take a sacred dance journey. To begin, wear comfortable clothes, kick your shoes off if you want and either keep your eyes opened or closed (just be sure to have ample space around you if your eyes are closed). Next, put your favorite music on and allow your body to move in whichever way it feels called to. Don't force the movements, just flow with the beat.
The more upbeat the music is, the more vigorous your movements can be. If the music is slower, with a steadier beat, move with more fluidity and grace. Make it as subtle or as wild as you desire, depending on how you are feeling in that moment.
Give it a try. There's no wrong or right way. Just BE the music. Whether you sway, leap, twirl, shimmy, stomp, clap, slide, tap or dip, you will catapult yourself into the present moment. Watch how your life flourishes in the most unique and fulfilling ways that you could never have imagined.
The more I connect within, be it sitting in meditation or movement meditation such as a walk in nature, journaling or dance, the more insights and inner wisdom flow freely through me to deepen my life experiences, both personally and professionally.
Plus, dancing has many health benefits. Below are the undeniable benefits, (in my opinion), that you receive when you get up and dance.....
The Benefits of Boogying Down:
~ Gets your circulation moving
~ Gets your creative juices flowing
~ Alleviates worry for a few moments while you’re engulfed in the present moment
~ Builds confidence and self-esteem
~ Strengthens the mind-body connection
~ Increases your flexibility
~ Burns calories so you can eat more organic dark chocolate :)
~ Increases your overall sense of well-being
So next time you’re feeling blue or stuck in some way, grab your favorite tunes, kick off your shoes and start to dance! And if you can’t dance for some reason, tap your toes, stomp your feet, snap your fingers or bob your head. You will feel so much better after and your stuck areas will start shifting to life-enhancing-high-energy-vibin’ creativity! Wihoo!
Go ahead.....right now.....put your favorite music on, kick off your shoes and boogie down!
*Important note: Don’t forget to do only what feels good and right for you. If you have any medical conditions, don’t boogie down until you consult your medical practitioner.
