Question: Is there a Natural Alternative for Polysorbate 80 in Cleansers?
"Asian washable oil cleansers have oil & polysorbate 80. This enables them to disolve makeup & wash off completely with just water. Do you know a natural alternative that will do the same?
Answer from Ivana (ANB Ingredient Expert - i2byIvanaK.com)
Polysorbate 80 is only one of many emulsifiers used in such applications. There are naturally derived alternatives, such as polyglyceryl esters. The emulsifier needs to be oil-soluble. As each emulsifier has its unique properties, they will need to be tested for the particular application. Sucrose esters as well as some oil-soluble surfactants derived from natural sources could also work in a natural oil cleanser.
I hope this helps.
Question: What can I use to Preserve my Face Oil Naturally?
I am going to make my own face oil and wanted to avoid using preservatives but have thought better of it. I have looked into using grapefruit seed extract but I think it's water based and need to figure out how to blend it together if I use that. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you kindly."
Answer from Alexandra (ANB Aromatherapy/Natural Skin Care Expert - The Scent Atelier)
Your question is a good one. When making emulsions, you always want to preserve the product. I have always used some grapefruit seed extract to keep the ph level in emulsions (oil and water mixtures). Grapefruit Seed Extract is mostly glycerin, sometimes vegetable glycerin, and is soluble in water more than oil.
In straight oil blends, you need very little for preservation, and for that, if I am making the plant oil myself (an infusion of the plant in vegetable oil) I use up to 3 drops per ounce of a blend of any of these essential oils: Thyme, Frankincense, Myrrh, and/or gum benzoin.
A carrier oil that is currently readily available is org. Avocado oil. I also enjoy using Camellia oil as a base. Since I live in Hawaii I use the fresh and regionally available oils of Kukui Nut, Macadamia Nut, and Coconut oils. Look in your locale for the closest vegetable oil supplier and go bio-regional: it’s the best stewardship of plants and the planet.
