The recycled, stale air we are often exposed to in the winter time here in Northeast Ohio can really dry out not only your skin but your hair as well.  Most office buildings and public places rely on recycled, forced heat which can not only dry out your eyes and irritate and dry your throat and lungs, but also has drying effects on all other extensions of your body.

It is for this reason that it becomes really important to use some super-hydrating hair and skin care products during the winter. Especially for those of us that live in areas where there are dramatic season changes and extremely cold temperatures and low humidity in the winter time.  While a lack of humidity helps in the frizz department, it does not help with retaining moisture and it can actually sap moisture form the hair and make it more brittle and dull.

Be sure to use a shampoo that is free of sulfates. Sulfates, which are usually in the form of SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) or SLES (Sodium Laureth or Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate) are too harsh on both the hair and the skin. They are corrosive to the naturally protective lipid barriers that protect the skin, and they are drying and destructive to the delicate cuticle of our hair strands.

There are better alternatives to cleansing your hair and your skin, so be sure to pick a shampoo and a facial and body cleanser that is totally free of these sulfate ingredients.  A great alternative is decyl glucoside (decyl polyglucose) which is a combination of corn and sugar derived ingredients that gently lift dirt and debris.

Pick a soap for the skin that contains natural oils.  This way, your skin is getting clean but also receiving the benefits of nutrient rich compounds that are often found in oils found in nature which are plant derived.

When it comes to choosing a conditioner for your hair, even if you don’t typically use heavier conditioners, you may want to look for something that is deep-conditioning and contains ingredients like coconut oil and argan oil.  Natural oils like these are one of the best ways to get fatty acids and proteins deposited into the porous areas of your hair so that they can plump up and remain hydrated and smooth in appearance.

Panthenol, otherwise known as Pro Vitamin B5, is another excellent addition to shampoos and conditioners. This natural vitamin has an amazing ability to really penetrate both the hair and skin to deliver deep hydration and smoothing effects.

Choosing the right skin and hair care products really goes a long way in keeping your skin soft and supple and your hair hydrated and smooth.  If you still find that you’re experiencing dryness, you can always invest in a small humidifier for your home.
